New clinical research shows the potential benefits of PS128 for Parkinson’s disease symptoms

PS128 is a strain of the bacterial species Lactobacillus plantarum that has been shown to modulate levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which are abnormal in people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. The remarkably potent L. plantarum PS128 is now available in the United States via our Solace Probiotic capsules. Solace is a daily probiotic supplement that helps support a healthy mind and body.

PS128 is considered a psychobiotic — a probiotic with mental health effects. When these levels of dopamine and serotonin are abnormal, conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), depression, and Parkinson’s disease can arise.

In this pioneer study, PS128 was used as adjunct treatment for a group of twenty-five Parkinson’s disease patients for three months. Participants continued to take their own prescribed anti-Parkinsonian medications throughout the study. Significant improvements were shown in motor symptoms and in subjective reported quality of life. Additionally, treatment with PS128 was shown to lower levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO), which is an inflammatory protein reportedly linked to Parkinson’s in its activity.
